Jordan Neely was a 30 year old black man struggling with complex trauma, poverty, and homelessness, who was recently killed on a New York City subway. He was a human being with as much specificity, complexity, and inner world as you or I. His life was precious and irreplaceable, and his violent death is an atrocity and an irrevocable loss.
Incredible analysis of a situation that is far more complex than any of our media outlets would have you believe. You look at other issues at play while simultaneously acknowledging the racial inequities present in our cultural background! Unfortunately, something I'm witnessing in Neoliberal Massachusetts is the drum beat for "reinstitutionalization" which I view to be another form of mass incarceration. I can relate to Jordan in at least the way of being on the autistic spectrum, I have some meltdowns that can look pretty ugly, almost entirely when they're provoked by others. I know and have the privilege to self isolate when I know this is coming. Here in the states we're staring down the barrel of a possible second Trump presidency where he is currently on the campaign trail promising to bring the full power of the federal government, especially to states that he calls "liberal" (my state) and force them to end homelessness his way, with mass incarceration. I wonder if this movement is happening north of the border? I have very personal and visceral feelings towards involuntary commitment and psych holds.
